Roman glass plate with fish decoration surrounded by zig-zag and letters, 4th century A.D.

Flat plate made of water green blown glass with a ring base. The decoration is of a fish framed by a zig-zag pattern with letters. With respect to the iconography of the fish, in antiquity it symbolized fertility because of the large number of eggs it lays, but with the new mentality brought from Christianity it takes on great importance and veneration because its words hide the translation of Jesus Christ Son of God Savior: I (those) CH (ristos) TH (eou) U (ios) S (oter).
